Some believe Bernardo Buontalenti of Florence (a favorite to the court of Catherina dei Medici) created gelato. The History of Gelato dates back to the 16th century. Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli owner of Café Procope in Paris introduced gelato to Europe.

There is a documented 4000 year old Chinese recipe that very closely resembles today’s gelato. Like recipes from the Far East, Middle East, and Europe also exist. Gelato was created in Italy in the North in Dolomite, and it was also created in the South by Sicilians. There are many other possibilities as to the origin of gelato. No matter who you believe, Italian fathers passed their gelato recipes and businesses to their son generation after generation and made it popular around the world.

Gelato in Italian means “frozen”. It contains less air than ice cream therefore the flavors are more intense. Since it is made from all natural ingredients it is healthier, and it contains fewer calories and less butter fat.
